So here is a shot that I took using the 3rd lines. My subject is right of center. This allows the road to curve into the bridge. I feel this gives the eye a little more to follow as well as add some foliage to the left. I like this composition much more.

I like the composition of both photos, but the added foliage does give a different feel to the picture. Did you also try placing the subject left of center?

Yes I took a picture left of center as well. There was alot of metal ie. reflectors guard rail street signs. Also another road was starting there, and heading out of picture. It didn't look as crisp to me.
I feel that placing one's subject off-center gives the eye a path to travel to arrive at the focus. This becomes even clearer when one uses a road, as you have. The first just shows a simple VT scene, but the second kind of shows how one got there. Great examples.
