So this is the other shot I took. Still the same handsome guy standing on a rock. Well I was playing with focus and I may have given a bit too much attention to the rock. I'm not sure. I do like how Ethan looks stark almost moody against the sky. Well this is my runner up, nearly as good, # 2.

This shot is cool because, if the sky was even brighter, it gives kind of a silhouette of the statue. I have a handful of these type of statue shots on my flicker account.

This shows how what is in the background can make a difference on what you are taking a picture of. The shot of the sky seems to mute the details of the statue due to the brightness of the sky and in the background with the tree, it is easier to see some of the detail of the statue. Did you try some up close shots of parts of the statue?
